“The den’s bright wallpaper and fun art brings my entire family together to relax and unwind,” says Gandhi. A sofa-cum-bed, placed there after much deliberation within the family until a good one was finally procured, makes the den perfectly adaptable as a guest bedroom when needed. The half glass partition was Bahl’s deliberate move to break the train compartment-like feel to the original ‘alley way’ style layout by breaking down a wall; “and also to bring in a villa vibe,” she says. Gandhi and Bahl chose to neutralise the larger canvas of subtle wall and floor colours and use a palette of warm yellows, pinks, greens and faded blues in the furniture. “I chose shapes and fabric to bring out eclectic moods and contrasts – rust, wine red, mustard, wooden touches and outside city colours,” says Bahl. A farmhouse style dining table and cane back chairs feature in the dining area.

‘This New Architecture’: Contemporary Voices on Bombay’s Architecture Before the Nation State

It's one of my favorite places to go in LA and especially beautiful at twlight. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important works, in a style he called "California Romantic," designed in 1917 and built between 1919 and 1923 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. The complex includes the main house, garage, and one other surviving structure. The 1993-built stucco structure, bearing the clean lines and flat roofs typical of modernist design, was recently reconceived by Yigal Hamias, who purchased it in 2022.

From Some, For All: Pioneers of Print Making in India

Designers and artists in the movement sought to bring homeowners closer to nature through simplicity and lots of natural light. Architects made modern style available to the masses during the postwar period when the world was undoubtedly becoming more technologically advanced. The Gateway of India is one of the major monuments in the city, located in the Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai(formally Crawford Market) in south Mumbai was named after Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of the city. The building, completed in 1869, was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. The structure was built using coarse buff coloured Kurla stone, with redstone from Vasai.

The building has breathtaking Gothic architecture and is classified as a Grade I heritage structure. The Elphinstone College building is among the finest Victorian structures in India. It was designed by Trubshaw and Khan Bahadur Muncherjee Murzban in the 1880s and originally meant to house the Government Central Press. 1917Architectural firm with name partners Thomas Sedgwick Gregson, Claude Batley and Henry Foster King. D’Avoine (inducted in 1935), Kumar Ramsinh (1936), Dattatray R. Chowdhari (1945), Pheroze Kudianavala (1960), Julius Lazarus Vaz (1961), Suryakant D. Chowdhari (1961) and S.

The William Morris patterned wallpaper from Morris & Co, England, is the highlight of the den, bringing in a sort of English home feel to the space. An L-shaped sofa-cum-bed in a warm wine fabric and an emerald pouffe coffee table, both from Magnolia, face a black TV unit with handmade handles and art prints from the Egon Schele show in London. While Bahl worked on layouts, material selection and overseeing all the civil work, Gandhi curated the mood boards, furniture, art and décor. Gandhi completely credits Bahl with composing the idea of the space and its planning, especially the characteristic deep sage green running throughout the house which ties up neatly with the kota-like flooring. This paper traces the development of a modern urban sensibility in the practitioners of architecture in Bombay in the decades before the Nation State. The architecture of the time was prolific but was in contrast to imperialist monumentality. The writings of the 1930s and 1940s that follow these developments are often polemical, pragmatic and even contradictory; but unabashed and outspoken. Both architects and laypersons vigorously debated and argued in public lectures and meetings what Claude Batley would call ‘This New Architecture’.

Living in Harmony with Nature:

They have weathered well into the second decade of the new millennium, seventy or eighty years after they were contemplated, built and commented upon. They knit together the emerging urban fabric of a commerce driven metropolis and stand symbolic of its global aspirations and cosmopolitan culture. At the same time, they address the context of the region critically, not so much from a cultural but an environmental standpoint. For the city of Bombay and by extension- the prospective free India, these buildings signify Modernism and stand as the vanguard of a peoples’ larger future.

Embracing Elegance: The Modernist Houses of Bombay

G. Ranadive (1966).Their clientele included several princely states, which were primarily carried out by Henry Foster King and Kumar Ramsinh, who also designed Morvi Palace, in Gujarat. Architectural firm with name partners Mancherji Pallonji Contractor and Nusserwanji Dorabji Kanga. They were commissioned to build Empress Court, Oval Maidan with Gajanan B. Mhatre as consulting architect, and Carmichael House, Cumbala Hill. We list the ‘Architects‘ first (alphabetised by last name), followed by the ‘Architectural Firms‘. You may notice overlaps in the practices, representative of a spirit of synergy and collaboration that shaped the city.

Steeped in nostalgia, Queen Victoria bestowed the title of "Royal" upon the club in 1876. These days the atmosphere around the monument resembles a circus at times, with numerous vendors peddling everything from balloons to Indian tea. Also of note, Mumbai has the second largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, after Miami.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, architecture studio Rafael Viñoly Architects revealed four skyscrapers and a series of public spaces in the city, which will be the studio's first built project in Canada. Reacting to old ways of thinking about the world, Modernists rejected the strict moral codes and stuffiness of the Victorian Period. Artists, architects, writers, and designers aimed to break with the past, which obviously led them to a lot of experimentation.

Founded in 1938 by the prolific architect Gajanan B. Mhatre, architect Khanderao Anandrao Parelkar and interior decorator Mehdi Ali Mirza. Karfule, Ballard Estate and Marble Arch, Cumbala Hill are some of their most notable buildings. Architect and engineer known for designing Oval View and Ram Mahal, Churchgate; Shalimar, Marine Drive; and Pallonji Mansion, Cuffe Parade. Also credited with designing the first reinforced concrete structure in Iraq. 26 February 1942Known as the 'King of theatres,' Lamb was the leading designer of cinema theatres around the world, and designed the Metro Cinema, Marine Lines.

The main vehicle of their deliberations was the Journal of the Indian Institute of Architects (JIIA). Public lectures, seminars and meetings were held frequently to discuss and debate what Claude Batley would call ‘This New Architecture’. The walls throughout this farmhouse-style home are painted in Silver Satin OC-26 by Sherwin-Williams. This house is in an area of the Silver Lake neighborhood called The Colony, where you'll find a number of Neutra designs on and around Neutra Place. You can see them from the outside by touring off Earl Street between Silver Lake Boulevard and Glendale Boulevard. It sounds more like modern times than 1915, but Dr. Roy Lanterman was ahead of his time when he wanted to build a fireproof bungalow made of reinforced concrete.

The Improvement Trust would also provide for playing grounds and recreation areas, and paved footpaths as soon as buildings were constructed (Kapadia, 1937, p. 259). In the development of Bombay, the relationship between the British and Indians was quite unique, unlike that in most other cities. Indian hands wielded Bombay’s mercantile strength, and British interests in the same hands often suborned this authority. The expected relationships flip-flopped without causing any undue concern to either side, thus allowing for the breathing (creative) space for Indian architects to operate in. By this time, the commercial clout of the city, the city’s wealth was in the hands of affluent Indians, the influential elite in Bombay, rather than its colonial masters. Here the relation was much more that of equals and quite symbiotic in nature.

Patel, inspired by Aalto, incorporated his organic forms as a seashell-shaped canopy in the design. The building was way ahead of its time, and even in the 1950s, it had central air-conditioning, concealed plumbing and wiring, and an automated telephone system. Moreover, Modernist Houses often feature innovative rainwater harvesting systems, solar panels, and other eco-friendly technologies, further underscoring their commitment to sustainable living. Residents are encouraged to embrace a more mindful way of life, connecting with the rhythms of nature while enjoying the comforts of modern amenities. 1 This paper deals with a period of 1930s and 1940s and retains the contemporary name of the city – Bombay.
